PALLIATIVE CARE AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Palliative Care is the comprehensive treatment method that helps removing the serious diseases and accompanying pain, stress and similar findings. The objective of Palliative Care is to provide patient relief and to support the living quality of the patient and the patient’s family. Individuals suffering from chronic serious diseases can receive palliative care along with their ongoing treatment.

Palliative care assists individuals coping with serious and chronic diseases. Palliative care is important for the individuals in case of following illnesses:

  • Cancer
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Emphysema
  • Kidney Failure
  • Liver failure
  • Neurologic diseases such as Parkinson’s, ALS and Alzheimer’s

The patients receiving palliative care expect to receive focused treatment for many symptoms. Some of the common symptoms we come across frequently are shortness of breath, pain, tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, depression, anxiety and inability to sleep. Palliative care helps patients gain strength and improve the functional capacity and the body’s ability to tolerate medications.

Palliative care team includes staff physician, nurse and healthcare support personnel. Besides, other healthcare professionals such as dietitians, physiotherapists can be included in the team.

Palliative care team helps you to manage pain and other symptoms, provide guidance throughout the confusing health system and to make decisions about health choices and provide emotional support within that period.

It is important to know that palliative care is different than hospice care service. You can take advantage of palliative care at any stage of the illness process. Palliative care services run in conjunction with treatment services and its main objective is improving the quality of life and comfort. ‘’Palliative care is not end-of-life care.’’

If you believe that you or your loved one are a candidate for palliative care, consult this with your physician. Your physician will suggest you a palliative care team. The palliative care team can work with your primary physician when you decide to receive palliative care service.
