What is ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)?
ALS disease, also known as Motor Neuron Disease, is an advancing and irreversible neurologic disease that causes muscle weakness, muscle loss and swallowing and respiratory problems linked to such muscle loss.
ALS disease is caused by neuron loss in the central nervous system section that contains spinal cord and brain stem. It is observed more frequently at the age of 40’s and 50’s.
Estimated number of ALS patients in our country is approximately 8.000. The patients need the care and assistance of others in the further stages of the disease in order to live on. Caring of ALS patients are usually provided by their spouses, children and other relatives. The biggest problem encountered by the relatives who have no prior caring experience regarding the disease is being deprived of sufficient-accurate information and professional care assistance and being alone with the encountered issues. Therefore, the ALS disease effects to a considerable extent not only the patient but also the individuals who undertake the caring of patient, physically, socially, emotionally and economically.
The “Yaşamak Yetmez, Yaşatmak da Lazım” project being carried out within the scope of Sabancı Foundation’s Grant Scheme by ALS-MNH Association and Home Care Association and Medical Center aims to increase the quality of life of the ALS patients and the family members who undertake the caring of patients by providing medical and social assistance to them and to raise social awareness about the ALS disease.
The project is the first study in Turkey with respect to the home care and in the field of ALS. The ALS training is still continuing within the scope of training services in the provinces of Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Adana, Mersin, Antalya and Bursa.
