ALS Care Training

ALS Care Training is a specialized educational program designed to inform both family members and professional healthcare providers involved in the care of individuals with ALS. These sessions aim to equip participants with accurate knowledge and practical skills to address the physical, emotional, and daily challenges that may arise throughout the progression of the disease.

Given that ALS is a progressive condition with intensive care requirements, proper caregiving not only enhances the patient’s quality of life but also helps reduce the risk of burnout among caregivers. At Medical Center, we offer comprehensive, field-based ALS training content to ensure patients and their families know they are not alone on this difficult journey.

This training program was developed in connection with the “Life is Not Enough—We Must Help Others Live Too” project, through which we visited ALS patients and their families to support and improve their quality of life.

What is ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)?

Also known as a motor neuron disease, ALS is a progressive neurological condition characterized by muscle weakness, muscle wasting, and resulting difficulties in swallowing and breathing. Currently, there is no known cure, and the disease advances gradually over time.

ALS occurs due to the loss of motor neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord—parts of the central nervous system. It is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 50.

There are an estimated 8,000 ALS patients in Türkiye. In the later stages of the disease, patients become dependent on the care and support of others to continue their daily lives. Typically, this care is provided by spouses, children, or other close family members.

One of the biggest challenges is that most family caregivers have no prior experience with the condition and lack access to reliable information and professional guidance. This can leave them feeling overwhelmed and isolated.

As such, ALS impacts not only the patient but also caregivers—physically, emotionally, socially, and financially.

Sabancı Foundation Grant Program

The “Life is Not Enough—We Must Help Others Live Too” project, jointly organized by the ALS/MND Association and the Home Care Association within the scope of the Sabancı Foundation Grant Program, seeks to provide medical and social support to ALS patients and their families. The goal is to enhance their quality of life and raise public awareness about ALS.

This initiative is one of the first structured projects in Türkiye focusing on both ALS and home-based care.

As part of our educational services, ALS Care Training is currently being offered in the cities of Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Adana, Mersin, Antalya, and Bursa.
